From partnering with local elementary schools to participating in an annual book drive, the Nation's Capital Alumnae Club is proud to participate in a number of projects and events that promote literacy in the Washington, D.C. area each year. Read > Lead > Achieve® is Pi Beta Phi's philanthropic effort, which inspires a lifelong love of reading that can unlock true potential, creating a more literate and productive society.As Pi Phis, we believe in the power of reading. We believe reading always has been — and always will be — a powerful step toward a life of enduring impact. We believe that when one out of four children grow up unable to read, that’s one child too many. For more than a century, we’ve committed ourselves to creating a more literate and productive society.Every Pi Phi is asked to be ONE who will participate, donate and advocate for Pi Phi's Read > Lead > Achieve reading initiatives which include: Fraternity Day of Service Signature Events – Pi Beta Phi's literacy events, held the weekend of Fraternity Day of Service in major cities across North America, which give volunteers the opportunity to distribute 20,000 new, age-appropriate books to children in need. Champions are Readers® – Pi Beta Phi's unique reading enrichment program for students in prekindergarten through third grade. FDS500 – Pi Beta Phi Foundation’s grant program which awards 100 First Book® recipient groups, nominated by Pi Phi clubs and chapters, with grants to purchase 500 new books for children in need. The Literacy Advocacy Project – Pi Beta Phi’s advocacy training program which explores all aspects of literacy advocacy — why it’s important, how you can make an impact and what is needed to become an agent of change.
